If there’s one canine disease which strikes fear into the minds of pet owners it’s Canine Distemper.
Canine Distemper is caused by a highly contagious virus which affects the gastrointestinal, respiratory, skin, immune, and central nervous system. Symptoms can take up to 14 days to show up after being exposed.
Signs and symptoms are:
- Fever
- Nasal discharge
- Eye discharge
- Lethargy
- Sneezing
- Coughing
- Difficulty breathing
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Loss of appetite
- Thickening of nose and footpads
- Pneumonia
- Muscle twitching
- Seizures
- Involuntary movement.
There is no known cure for Canine Distemper. Veterinary treatment usually relies on treating individual symptoms and using antibiotics to prevent secondary infections. It is for this reason that prevention is considered the most accurate way of eradicating and protecting your dog from distemper.
