Leptospirosis is one of the five most common, potentially fatal diseases that your dog is likely to encounter and therefore is covered by the 5-in-1 Vaccine.
Its highly contagious and can also be passed onto humans. Death usually results from Kidney failure – in both animals and humans. Dogs and cats contract the disease from body tissues, or urine of an infected animal. It is usually caught from rat urine / feces.
It’s therefore really important that you keep your pet’s food in a rat proof container and also make sure you clean water bowls thoroughly daily.
Signs of Leptospirosis in your pet include:
- Fever or decreased appetite
- Diarrhea
- Increased drinking
- Weakness or reluctance to move due to pain
- Jaundice (yellowing of the gums, eyes or skin).
Don’t wait until it is too late. Get your dog vaccinated now.
If you suspect your dog or cat has it – bring them to us immediately before kidney failure sets in and it is too late.
