Seven Signs your Senior Dog needs a Check-Up

7 signs your senior dog needs a vet check up

  1. Weight loss

As pets get older, they may gradually lose a couple of pounds. However, if you notice any sudden or significant weight changes in your dog, it’s important to speak to your vet to identify the cause.

  1. Changes in appetite

When a pet with a previously normal appetite seems to be constantly ravenous, there could be a number of explanations. Loss of appetite, on the other hand, can have numerous causes. Your vet can help determine if there’s a problem.

  1. Increased thirst and frequent urination

If your pet is drinking lots more than usual, and warmer weather or indoor heating isn’t the explanation, it should be checked.

  1. Lumps and bumps

While lumps and bumps aren’t uncommon, especially on dogs, their causes can be varied and it’s always worth getting an unexplained swelling checked out. Keep up with your regular check-ups to help your vet spot any skin changes before they become a cause for concern.

  1. Lethargy

Losing interest in playing, and sleeping more in the daytime, but less at night, may indicate a problem. With a thorough check-up, your vet will be able to determine the cause and get your pet the right treatment.

  1. Behaviour changes

Forgetting trained behaviour, being easily startled, yowling or barking at night, and showing signs of anxiety, can indicate a problem. As pets age, they can also suffer hearing loss which can make them nervous and stressed. Behaviour changes, such as a previously docile dog suddenly snapping or biting, can also indicate that your pet is in pain. Any number of problems (such as arthritis) could be the cause – your vet can help you support your pet and decide on the right course of action.

  1. A bad smell

If your pet starts to smell a bit, it’s worth checking out the cause. For example, smelly breath in dogs may point to gum disease. If you’ve noticed your pet’s bad breath, make sure to get it seen to as soon as possible and speak to your vet about treating the cause.

Have you noticed any of the symptoms on this list? Don’t hesitate to book an appointment with us and, to ensure these symptoms don’t crop up in future, schedule regular six-monthly check-ups, too.

Toys that Harm

Toy that Harm

When purchasing a present for your dog, keep in mind how durable it is. Small rubber toys can be broken and digested by your furry friend leading to gastro-intestinal blockages which can be fatal. If you suspect your dog has eaten something it can’t digest, like hard pieces of a toy, talk to us immediately on 0999 885 1219 / 035 528 5015 or message us on Facebook.

Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis is one of the five most common, potentially fatal diseases that your dog is likely to encounter and therefore is covered by the 5-in-1 Vaccine.

Its highly contagious and can also be passed onto humans. Death usually results from Kidney failure – in both animals and humans. Dogs and cats contract the disease from body tissues, or urine of an infected animal. It is usually caught from rat urine / feces.

It’s therefore really important that you keep your pet’s food in a rat proof container and also make sure you clean water bowls thoroughly daily.

Signs of Leptospirosis in your pet include:

  • Fever or decreased appetite
  • Diarrhea
  • Increased drinking
  • Weakness or reluctance to move due to pain
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the gums, eyes or skin).

Don’t wait until it is too late. Get your dog vaccinated now.

If you suspect your dog or cat has it – bring them to us immediately before kidney failure sets in and it is too late.

New Puppy Check-Up

If you’ve recently adopted or purchased a pet, then we advise you to book an appointment for their first examination within the first few weeks of ownership. Younger animals are very vulnerable to illness, particularly Parvovirus. It is a slow, painful death that can kill a dog within 48 hours of the first symptoms. Bringing your pet in early will allow us to make sure they have the vaccinations they need, reassure you of their health, and give us a starting point for their medical records.

Don’t leave it too late – book an appointment now 0999 885 1219 / 035 528 5015 or message us on Facebook.
