Erlichiosis

Erlichiosis

Ehrlichiosis is a tick-borne disease common in dogs. We’ve been seeing a lot of this in the community lately and it’s something you should be checking your dogs for.
Common signs are:

  • Fever and lethargy
  • Weight loss or loss of appetite
  • Abnormal bleeding or discharge
  • Eye inflammation
  • Vomiting and diarrhea.

Common places ticks hide on dogs are under the collar, inside of ears, near the eyelids, private areas and between toes. Ehrlichiosis is treatable but if left untreated can be quite dangerous. We recommend keeping your dog on a year-round flea and tick prevention medication.

Skin Conditions

Common Skin Conditions

One of the most common problems we see at the clinic are skin conditions.
There are many different causes of skin problems and it is vital that you identify the source as the treatment is different for each cause.
It could be due to allergies, bacteria, fungus, mange mites or something more serious such as internal issues.
The only way to accurately do this is via a skin scrape.
Skins problems are torturous for dogs – causing constant itching and discomfort – but often the cure is relatively inexpensive.
If your dog has a problem with its skin – come along to the clinic and get a skin scrape.

Don’t wait until your dog gets to this state – book an appointment now 0999 885 1219 / 035 528 5015 or message us on Facebook.

Why Spay and Neuter

Reasons to Spay or Neuter your pet

The single biggest animal welfare problem facing the local area are the number of stray cats and dogs. It is not their fault – and rounding them up only delays the problem as more strays move in to a recently cleared area. The only humane way resolve the excessive numbers of stray animals, and the problems they inadvertently cause, is to reduce the numbers of new litters.

Rescuing abandoned and rehabilitated dogs from the Dumaguete Animal Sanctuary rather than purchasing new animals from breeders is also part of the solution. There are many wonderful pets waiting for loving homes – take a look at www.dumagueteanimalsanctuary.com/our-rescues !

If you already have a pet dog or cat, sterilising them is the responsible thing to do. The benefits for your pet include

  • Reduced spraying and marking
  • Reduced aggression
  • Reduced roaming
  • Decreased risk of cancer
  • Increased lifespan of 3 – 5 years.

We carry out Spaying (females) and Neutering (males) at Waggin Tails Vet Clinic. We have frequent promos, and our commitment to helping manage the stray animal community locally, means that it’s a lot cheaper than you may think.

When you choose us it’s important to know that we run a CBC blood test to make sure that your pet is fit for surgery – this is a must! Surgery is always a risk for pets but especially so if the dog or cat has a low platelet count, low red blood cells and/or an infection. If a dog has low red blood cells or low platelets they can die during surgery. Often there are no outward signs of this so it is vital that you get a complete blood count prior to surgery.

Our spay and neuter costs cover blood tests and aftercare medicine.

If you’d like to discuss this further or make an appointment please message our Inbox

Parvovirus

Parvovirus

There are many diseases / illnesses that can befall our beloved pets – most of which can be prevented by 5 in 1 vaccination. Young puppies need 3 or 4 shots of this ( depending on the vaccine manufacturer).
Shots start at 6 weeks then every 2 – 3 weeks after this until all shots have been completed.
Parvovirus is one of the diseases that the 5-in-1 Vaccination prevents.
Parvovirus kills puppies very quickly, often within 48 hours so its really important to know the signs and get treatment ASAP. The signs of parvo virus are:

  • Lethargy
  • Loss of appetite
  • Severe vomiting
  • Severe diarrhea (foul smelling and often with blood)
  • Fever
  • Abdominal cramps.

There is a test for Parvovirus which is important to get if you can as other diseases have similar symptoms. It is essential to have an accurate diagnosis so appropriate treatment can be given immediately. Usually your pup will need an intravenous (IV) drip to prevent death by dehydration and malnutrition – without care, puppies usually die from dehydration or shock.

If you have previously had a puppy with Parvovirus it’s important to know that the virus can live on surfaces for a while, and in the soil for at least a year. It is spread through direct contact with an infected dog but can also be carried on shoes and clothing. For this reason, unvaccinated puppies should be kept indoors until all vaccinations are complete.

Waggin Tails can provide the 5-in-1 vaccine to keep your pup safe. You may think you can’t afford the vaccine – but treatment for Parvovirus is much more expensive – and death from Parvovirus is very painful. Call us now on 0999 885 1219 / 035 528 5015 or message us on Facebook.

Rabies

Rabies – the Facts

Rabies is an incurable and often fatal disease in humans.

The symptoms in humans include delirium, abnormal behavior, hallucinations, hydrophobia (fear of water), and insomnia. The acute period of disease typically ends after 2 to 10 days. Once clinical signs of rabies appear, the disease is nearly always fatal so if you are bitten by a dog that you think may have rabies, get to the Bite Clinic in Provincial hospital ASAP. A post-bite shot done within a couple of days can stop the virus spreading to your brain.

Rabies in dogs is passed through an infected animal biting an uninfected one, and is caused by a virus that is prevented through vaccination – one of the most effective vaccines there is. Rabies is ONLY passed on through the saliva of an already infected animal. So usually, only if you are bitten by an infected animal or you get the animal’s saliva in an open wound, can Rabies be contracted by humans or other dogs.

Rabies is ONLY contagious in dogs once the virus has made its way to the brain and down into the salivary glands- which can take weeks or even months to happen. Average time is usually 2 – 4 weeks after the dog is exposed to the Rabies virus.

Signs that the virus is in the salivary glands and therefore contagious are:

  • The dog is showing signs of aggression.
  • The dog will react aggressively towards any kind of movement in its direction.
  • The is afraid of or has difficult drinking water
  • The dog starts to bite itself or bang its head against walls or cages (Self Mutilation)
  • Excessive drooling

The good news is that you can very effectively protect your dog against Rabies by getting your dog vaccinated – at Waggin Tails Vet Clinic we offer Rabies vaccine for 150 pesos. Call us now on 0999 885 1219 / 035 528 5015 or message us on Facebook.
